Extremely Rare Pair of Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Presentation Flowerpots, Inscribed in Cobalt ""E.F.F." and "R.F.C.," Western PA origin, circa 1865-1880, each of pedestal-based form with flaring, heavily-crimped rims, each featuring the brushed cobalt initials, "E.F.F." and "R.F.C." Possibly made as wedding gifts with the initials referring to the bride and groom, this pair is noteworthy for a number of reasons, including their form, size, origin, unusual initialed inscriptions, and survival as a matching set. Literature: Illustrated and discussed in Made in Western Pennsylvania - Early Decorative Arts, The Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania, fig. 41. One with rim chips and tight cracks on underside extending onto base. The other in excellent condition with minor rim chips. H (of each) 4 5/8".
