Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Star-Shaped Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded spout, brush-decorated with a stylized floral motif in the form of a star with bullseye center Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Unusual cobalt stripe along edge of handle. In-the-firing contact marks to front shoulder, including a depression. A small in-the-firing surface chip and small adhered piece of clay at base. A thin in-the-firing contact mark to handle. Staining and in-the-firing discoloration to surface. H 17".
