Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, semi-ovoid jar with flared rim and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a leafy stem bearing two tulips. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Chips to rim and inner rim for lid. A 5/8" chip to one handle. A minor chip to opposite handle. A 3 1/2" fork-shaped surface line to shoulder area. A small in-the-firing iron ping to midsection. A 4 1/2" diagonal line ascending from base on front. Some chips to bottom edge, most or all of which occurred in the firing. In-the-firing residue to surface on right side of jar. Some light surface staining. H 13 1/4".
