One-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Stenciled Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "F.H. COWDEN / HARRISBURG," PA origin, circa 1880, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, pierced clay tabs fitted with a wood-and-wire bail handle, and applied handle at base on reverse; decorated on the front with a wreath-like brushwork at the base of the spout and on the reverse with a large scrolled stenciled design. Brushed cobalt highlights to clay tabs. Includes tin lid. Staining to surface. Two small rim chips. Base of rim with two small chips and some wear. Chips to one applied clay tab at shoulder. A chip and small U-shaped line to spout. A spot of wear to handle at base on reverse. Small spots of fry to cobalt on front. H 8 1/8".
