Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Solid-Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, semi-ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and semi-squared spout, brush-decorated with a bird perched on stylized mound featuring an unusual cobalt-highlighted body, long, striped tail, and spotted wing. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a minor glazed-over chip to handle, two minor in-the-firing pings to surface, a minor recessed contact mark to base of decoration, and mottling to clay. H 14".
