One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG," PA origin, circa 1865, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, handle at base on reverse, and applied clay tabs with wood-and-wire bail handle, brush-decorated on the reverse with large horizontal tulip motif and on the front with a wreath surrounding the spout and unusual fern-like brushwork to the underside of the spout itself. Cobalt highlights to applied clay tabs and handle at base. Cobalt accents to maker's mark and capacity mark. Some fry to cobalt on reverse. Two small chips to molding at base of collar on reverse. A small chip to handle at base. A 3 1/4" Y-shaped line to side of pail, not visible on interior. Minor surface wear. Some staining. H 9 7/8".
