Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped "C. CROLIUS / NEW-YORK," Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1825, ovoid pitcher with inwardly-tapering collar, brush-decorated with a three-stemmed foliate motif. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Brown slip wash on interior. Relatively few signed Crolius pitchers are known. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, consigned by a Crolius descendant. A shallow chip to top of spout and a small adjacent chip to front of spout. One rim chip. A small in-the-firing surface chip to one side of pitcher, an in-the-firing contact mark below handle, and a small piece of adhered clay to opposite side of pitcher. Some staining. H 13 1/4".
