Unusual Four-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, OH origin, probably Roseville, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied vertical handles, brush-decorated with a folky, double-stemmed floral motif featuring oval blossoms. Reverse with impressed and hand-incised four-gallon capacity marks. Desirable open-handled form, rarely seen on jars this small in capacity. A 2" vertical line at base on front. A large network of very tight lines to reverse and smaller lines to shoulder area on front, all possibly in-the-firing. Chipping to inner rim for lid. Surface lines / crazing to exterior of rim. In-the-firing base chips, including a 2" and 1 1/8" shallow base flake on reverse. H 14 1/2".
