Very Rare Four-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Inscribed "Worth $1.00," probably Catawba Valley, NC, circa 1870, ovoid jar with thin, semi-rounded rim, arched tab handles, and heavily-incised shoulder, the surface covered in an olive-colored alkaline glaze. Darker glaze to handles. Incised "Worth $1.00" below one handle. Relatively few examples of stoneware with inscribed prices are known. This recently-surfaced jar offers insight into the pricing of stoneware during the period. A 1 3/4" rim chip. A piece of adhered kiln residue to shoulder. Minor surface to midsection. H 12 5/8".
