Exceptional Stoneware Jug with Incised Pheasant Decoration, Manhattan, NY area, early 19th century, highly ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a large incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a standing pheasant with crest, ringed neck, detailed wing, and scalloped tail tip. This jug is one of a small body of pieces decorated by the same skilled craftsman. Two American stoneware masterworks attributed to this as-yet-unidentified potter are the Elizabeth Crane fish-decorated punchbowl in the collection of the American Folk Art Museum in New York City and the Henry Edoson bird-decorated flask in the Weitsman Collection at the New York State Museum in Albany, New York. Roughly ten pieces with this specific bird motif are known. Provenance: Crocker Farm, Inc., April 10, 2010, lot 13; Ex-Sotheby's, New York. Base chips. Hairlines at base and in handle. Two in-the-firing chips on top of spout. H 14 1/2".
