Scarce Five-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Keg-Form Cooler, Marked "A.E. SMITH / NORWALK," CT origin, circa 1840, barrel-shaped form with raised banding and applied circular bunghole, decorated with cobalt highlights to the maker's mark, banding, and circumference of the bunghole. Incised "5" on top of cooler. Thin cracks to flattened top of cooler. A large network of tight meandering lines to left side of cooler, possibly in-the-making. Underside with a 1 5/8" iron ping and a few small in-the-firing fissures, not visible on interior. Some minor in-the-firing chipping to bottom edge. Reverse with two in-the-firing surface chips, measuring 1 1/4" and 5/8". Other minor in-the-firing flaws to surface. H 14 1/2".
