Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Dated 1838, attributed to Smith and Day, Norwalk, CT, 1838, ovoid pitcher with wide collar, decorated with a slip-trailed design of three daisies within a wavy border. Slip-trailed below with the date, "1838,"underscored by a wavy flourish. Excellent form and decoration. A 3 1/2" hairline to right of spout. A 1 1/2" hairline to left of spout. A 2 1/4" line from rim on reverse. A 5" Y-shaped hairline on left side of body of pitcher. A 7/8" in-the-making base chip, which is partially glazed over. Additional very minor chipping to bottom edge. A small in-the-making chip to underside at edge. H 13".
