Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "WHITES UTICA," NY State origin, circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a stylized slip-trailed design of a pheasant with turned head, perched on a stump flanked by shrubs. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A long diagonal Y-shaped line to front. A 5 1/2" diagonal line below one handle, not visible on interior. Two chips to interior of rim. An in-the-firing iron ping to interior shoulder. A minor in-the-firing iron ping to reverse. One handle with a crack and small chip in front terminal and two chips along its edge. Some water glass staining to interior. H 9 3/8".
