Extremely Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Merchant Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "FROM / T.S. BALSLEY / DETROIT, MICH.," circa 1860, semi-ovoid jar with tooling to midsection and shoulder, ribbed handles, and semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated with an undulating vine bearing four blossoms and numerous leaves. Freehand number 4 at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Reverse impressed with extremely rare mark of T.S. Balsley. In-the-firing spalling to cobalt slip. A few minor base chips. A 5" Y-shaped line to underside, not visible on interior. A 5 1/2" inverted Y-shaped line to left side of jar's front. H 14 1/2".
