Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1870, semi-ovoid jar with tooling to shoulder and midsection, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with an undulating vine bearing two fuchsias. Freehand stripe decoration above. Base with large freehand "5" underscored by a stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A small chip to each handle. A chip and small U-shaped surface crack to interior of rim. An approximately 7" crack along edge of underside with smaller cracks emanating from it. A 14 1/2" crack extending up front of jar. Some minor surface wear. H 15 3/4".
