One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J.A. & C.W. UNDERWOOD. / FORT EDWARD, N.Y.," circa 1865-1867, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird with long tail, perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. A hairline through handle. A minor flake to spout. A thin, shallow in-the-firing contact mark to interior of spout. A 5/8" in-the-firing iron ping at base on reverse. A minor in-the-firing iron below handle on reverse. H 11 7/8".
