Monumental Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Dated 1867, attributed to J. Swank & Co., Johnstown, PA, 1867, wide-mouthed, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and ribbed lug handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with large sweeping tulip designs. Small floral motifs appear at each handle terminal. Inscribed with the large cobalt date, 1867, below one handle. Measuring eight to ten gallons in capacity, this work is among the largest surviving pieces of Swank pottery. Relatively few dated pieces by this family are known. Firing cracks throughout, including a wide, semi-circular firing crack in underside. In-the-firing chips around base. A 3/4" chip to interior of rim. A 4" hairline frim rim. H 16 1/4" ; Diam. 16 1/4".
