Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Grapes Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid pitcher with narrow collar and semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated with a cluster of grapes hanging from a long-leafed stem. Foliate device to collar. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. This work's combined form, decoration, and large size are rarely seen from this pottery. A 1 1/4" rim chip on reverse with a 1/2" line descending through it. A shallow 1/2" chip to interior of rim. A 7/8" chip to interior of rim near spout. A very shallow and narrow 1" in-the-firing flake to interior of rim. Shallow chipping to interior of spout and very minor wear to exterior of spout. A 5 3/4" crack from rim on reverse. Minor chipping to base. A small in-the-firing ping to right of decoration. Some light staining. H 13".
