Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Cornucopia Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG .PA," circa 1865, highly-ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, brush-decorated with a cornucopia featuring a spotted mouth and scrolled, swag-accented tail, brimming with flowers. In all, seventeen smaller flowers and two large daisies are depicted. One of a few Cowden & Wilcox cornucopia-decorated pieces that we have offered, this example having the most extensive cobalt brushwork of the group. Among the most extravagant products of this famed Central Pennsylvania pottery known. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which recently surfaced in Western Pennsylvania. An in-the-firing surface chip to handle and below handle. A 1" in-the-firing separation to underside of upper handle terminal. Two small in-the-firing chips to side of jug, including a 2 1/4" line extending through it. A tiny surface nick to front and side of jug. A 2 1/2" hairline below spout on front. A minor chip to top of spout and minor spout wear. H 17 1/2".
