Rare Slip-Decorated Redware Sugar Jar with Lid, Alamance County, NC origin, possibly Solomon Loy, circa 1825-1840, ovoid jar with horizontal strap handles, decorated on the front and reverse in slip-trailed manganese and yellow-colored slip with a vertical undulating vine motif. Further decorated below each handle with a vertical, stalk-like foliate motif in manganese and yellow-colored slip. Spotted yellow slip decoration to handle terminals and abstract trails of yellow slip running along the exterior of the handles. Surface covered in a sporadic lead glaze with mottled orange-and-green coloration. Interior coated in a brownish lead-and-manganese glaze. Original domed lid decorated with yellow-slip foliate devices surrounding a broad, button-shaped finial with dotted floral motif under a clear lead glaze. One of a few examples of this distinctive North Carolina form that we have offered, this jar appears to be slightly later in age than most examples known. Its brown-and-yellow over orange color scheme suggests it may have been made by Solomon Loy. Jar with 2 3/4" x 1 1/4" loss to rim, some minor rim chips (some of which are filled with very old putty repair), some wear to slip, a few minor chips to bottom edge, and minor exfolation to underside. Lid with long, shallow edge chips, partially filled with very old putty repair, primarily only visible when the lid is turned over. Wear to slip on lid. H (including lid) 10".
