Exceptional One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Chicken Pecking Corn Decoration, Stamped "E & L P NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1870, semi-ovoid jar with applied lug handles and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a chicken pecking kernels of corn from a stylized ground with shrubs. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. The chicken pecking corn motif of Edward and Luman P. Norton is among the rarest and most desirable renditions of this design produced with any regularity in the American stoneware tradition. Differing from earlier Norton family depictions of a chicken, those produced during this period present the bird with a plump body, dramatic downward-facing attitude, and profuse feather detail. This example includes a "hollow" wing that contrasts well with the heavy feathering. Featuring the Norton's thick, enamel-like slip, this jar's fine decoration is complemented by a small one-and-a-half-gallon size to the vessel. Very nice condition with a small in-the-firing lime ping to reverse and small chips to inner rim for lid. H 10 3/8".
