Three-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug, Incised "Lm," David Drake at Lewis Miles's Stony Bluff Manufactory, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1855, ovoid jug with delicately-formed, stepped spout, the shoulder incised with the initials, "Lm," beside an incised horseshoe-and-slash-mark symbol and three incised punctates. Surface covered in a mottled, gray-green alkaline glaze with thick runs to the side and reverse, applied over a reddish-brown ground. Fingerprints at base. Excellent color. A crack at the shoulder on front, extending through the "Lm" and ending below handle on reverse. Minor chips to underside at edge. H 15".
