Outstanding Fifteen-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Water Cooler with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped Twice "J. STADDEN / SUMMIT CO. OH," mid 19th century, ovoid cooler with circular bunghole, tooled shoulder, narrow mouth, and open handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with a sweeping stem bearing two large flower blossoms and a smaller bud. Reverse inscribed "15" in cobalt slip for fifteen gallons. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and scalloped decoration around bases of handles. Impressed with "J. STADDEN / SUMMIT CO. O" maker's mark on front and reverse. Includes wooden spigot and lid. Outstanding size and form with exuberant, heavy-handed brushwork. Provenance: Recently surfaced in the South-central U.S. One handle broken into three pieces and reglued, including a thin reglued sliver at lower terminal. Two rim chips. H 23 1/2".
