Outstanding Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Peacock Decoration, Stamped "WHITE'S UTICA," NY State origin, circa 1865, cylindrical jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a peacock with turned head, crest, and long, spotted tail, perched on a tree stump. The Northeastern bird-on-stump decoration typically represents what collectors refer to as a pheasant, depicting the bird with a long, straight tail of composed of graduated trails. This bird's rounded tail featuring spotted "eye" feathers within a cobalt-filled border, portraying the figure as a true peacock, is rarely found in Northeastern decorated stoneware. Arguably the finest piece that we have offered from the illustrious White family of New York State potters. Excellent condition with minor flaws. Spout with some in-the-firing clay residue and a small in-the-firing flake. Spots of wear to belly area of peacock. Some minor in-the-firing bubbling to stump. H 15 3/8".
