Rare Glazed Redware Hatted Dog with Stump Figural, PA origin, circa 1850-1880, hand-modeled figure of a seated dog wearing a hat, in begging stance with paws resting on a tree stump. Heavily-incised details throughout. Impressed circle decoration to hat and dog's collar. Oval base bordered with impressed star-in-circle motif. Lead-glazed surface with manganese accents over light-orange clay ground. Dog and stump were hollowed prior to firing, the dog likely serving as a spill holder and the smaller stump serving as a match safe. The addition of a hat on the dog is rarely seen in Pennsylvania redware animals and the hollowing of the figure for a utilitarian purpose is unusual. Very nice condition. Hat with two chips and some expected edge wear. Oval base with a minor nick. Other very minor surface wear. H 5 5/8" ; L 4 3/8".
