Exceedingly Rare and Important One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Impressed Eagle and Incised Foliate Decoration, Stamped "J. REMMEY. / NEW-YORK," John Remmey III, Manhattan, NY, early 19th century, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and open loop handles, decorated with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted design of a spread-winged Federal eagle with shield across its chest and sun rays above its head, clutching olive branches and arrows in its talons. Reverse decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted floral design consisting of a tall stem with flower bud flanked by scalloped leaves. This design is somewhat more elaborate than typically seen by this maker and includes intertwined incising at its base. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. One of a few known Remmey/Manhattan pieces decorated in this manner, this jar also features unusually fine incising on the reverse. Among the best examples of this potter's work known. Provenance: Recently surfaced in New Jersey. Rim chips. A small base chip. Some typical in-the-firing contact marks to surface. H 9 1/2".
