Extremely Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Stenciled Cobalt Rabbit Decoration, attributed to Somerset Potters Works, Somerset, MA, circa 1875, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a diagonally-stenciled design of a rabbit surrounded by heavy cobalt brushwork. Excellent decoration, color, and size. Outside of the work of Julius Norton of Bennington, Vermont, relatively few depictions of a rabbit are known in 19th century American stoneware. A spider crack to underside, including a crack extending 3 3/4" up right side of front from underside and a crack extending 2 1/4" up base on reverse. Some exfoliation to underside. A 2 1/2" crack from rim on front. A small chip and minuscule nick to one handle. H 7 5/8".
