Rare Large-Sized World's Columbian Exposition Stoneware Vase with Painted Native-American Decoration, American, probably Midwestern, Dated 1893, ovoid vase with narrow opening and squared handles, the salt-glazed surface decorated with a detailed, cold-painted design of two standing Native Americans in headdresses, one holding a tomahawk. Inscribed above with the cold-painted inscription, "WORLD'S COLUMBIAN / EXPOSITION / CHICAGO / 1893," the date flanked by stars. The World's Columbian Exposition was commonly known as the Chicago World's Fair. This vase appears to have been produced by a Midwestern stoneware manufactory specifically for the Exposition, with the choice made to cold paint the object versus decorating it with cobalt oxide prior to the firing. This may have been done for the simple reason that achieving such a detailed design with in that manner was too difficult to achieve. This vase would have been placed in one of the many displays installed by various American manufacturers to tout the work they were capable of. A wonderful artifact from a transitional time in the American stoneware industry. Excellent condition. H 21".
