Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Cat Face Decoration, Stamped "WM-A'MACQUOID&CO / NEW-YORK. / LITTLE WST 12TH ST.," circa 1870, cylindrical jar with flared collar and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed folk art design of a cat's face with large eyes, whiskers, beard, and open mouth with teeth. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. The finest example of Macquoid face-decorated stoneware that we have ever offered. Very nice condition. A 4 1/2" hairline in underside. An additional 1 3/4" hairline in underside, continuing 4 1/2" up side of jar below handle. Other short, faint vertical surface lines at base. Two minor chips to interior of rim. An in-the-firing discolored spot to reverse. Minor wear to one handle. Some scatttered exfoliation to Albany slip on interior base. Large reddish-colored circle on underside, created when a smaller jar was stacked on top of it during the firing. H 10".
