Outstanding Glazed Redware Tea Canister with Elaborate Two-Color Slip Decoration, probably Southeastern PA origin, late 18th or early 19th century, cylindrical form with footed base and dramatic, scalloped turnings tapering to a narrow mouth, the lead-glazed surface decorated with alternating straight and wavy trails of yellow and copper slip. An early 20th century label at base reads "NO. 7. / TEA JAR / PENNA." The tea canister or tea jar is a rarely-seen, primarily-early form. This example's rarity and decorative value are compounded by its highly unusual shape and striking use of slip decoration. Provenance: Pook and Pook, The Pioneer Collection of Dr. and Mrs. Donald A. Shelley, April 21, 2007, Lot 323. Very nice overall condition with chips and wear to mouth, the glazed surface surviving in excellent condition with only minor flaws. Additionally, a chip to underside, presumably in-the-making. H 6 5/8".
