Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG. PA," circa 1865, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a four-petaled blossom flanked by three flower buds, all accented with leafy brushwork. Central blossom includes unusual dash decoration to petals. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced PA collection, purchased by the consignor between 1963 and 1975. Very nice condition with several minor flaws. Decoration with light bubbling and two tiny in-the-firing contact marks. A minor in-the-firing contact mark (chip) to spout. An in-the-firing contact mark (chip) to handle. A tiny chip to bottom edge. A glazed-over 2" surface line at base on reverse. H 14".
