Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Star Face Decoration, Stamped "T. HARRINGTON / LYONS," NY State origin, circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a man's face surrounded by eight, alternating pointed and wavy rays. Slip-trailed "4" to left and right of design. Slip-trailed cobalt highlights to maker's mark. This work features a rare variation of Harrington's iconic star face, in which rigorously trailed wavy lines replace the diagonal pointed rays. It is the only example decorated in this manner that we have ever offered. Excellent condition with minor rim and base wear and a 4 3/4" Y-shaped surface line to right of decoration. H 11 1/4".
