Extremely Rare Redware Charger with Ten Commandments Inscription, attributed to the Smith Pottery, Norwalk, CT, circa 1825-1850, with coggled edge, the lead-glazed interior featuring the yellow-slip inscription, "thou / shalt not / take the name / of the Lord thy / god in / vain." This plate's inscription is based on God's Third Commandment to Man as written in Exodus 20:7. This work, along with a loaf dish with Beatitudes inscription (lot 27 in Crocker Farm's July 19, 2014 auction), rank among the most heavily-inscribed examples of Norwalk slipware known. The dish's abundant use of slip penmanship is complemented by its large proportions. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced CA collection. A number of small flakes to slip.
