Exceptional One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with bold slip-trailed design of a pheasant with turned head, perched on a forked tree stump. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Desirable size and unusually-thick, enamel-like application of the cobalt slip. Excellent condition with very minor glaze wear. H 10 3/4".
