Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Cobalt House Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a three-section Federal mansion on a hill, including fourteen windows, two chimneys, a circular dormer, and doorway. Split-rail fence in foreground and background. Provenance: Recently surfaced in the Northeastern U.S. A 3 3/4" vertical hairline from rim. A 6 3/4" diagonal crack descending from rim above one handle. A thin 2 3/4" diagonal crack from rim above opposite handle. An 8" vertical crack from rim on reverse. A minor, 2" in-the-firing surface fissure on underside, not visible on interior. Light staining. A minor in-the-firing iron ping to shoulder on reverse. H 11 1/2".
