Fine and Rare Seven-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Kaolin Slip Decoration, Stamped "CHANDLER / MAKER," Thomas Chandler, Kirksey's Crossroads, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, ovoid jar with rounded rim and arched tab handles, the surface covered in a celadon-colored alkaline glaze and decorated with slip-trailed kaolin drape and loop motifs on the front and reverse. Additional loop decoration below each handle. Visually-appealing, heavy glaze runs to shoulder. Fingerprints at base created when the jar was dipped in its glaze. Featuring crisp slip-trailing and imposing size, this jar is among the best examples of the form by Chandler that we have offered. A very old patched repair to a hole below one handle, secured with a screw, nut, and washer. Otherwise excellent condition. H 19".
