Extremely Rare and Important One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. BLACK / D.C. / ALEXA," James Black, Alexandria, D.C., circa 1831-1836, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied tab handles, brush-decorated around the body with a series of conjoined tulips emanating from series of graduated leaves. Impressed at the shoulder with extremely rare James Black maker's mark within an oval border. Featuring influence by Baltimore's Parr family in its form and decoration, this jar is one of a few signed examples of Black's work known. Provenance: Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates Auctions, Jun 28, 2008, lot 20. Excellent condition with two chips to end of one handle. H 9 1/2".
