Large-Sized Redware Figure of a Standing Dog, PA origin, possibly Anthony Bacher, Adams County, PA, mid 19th century, hand-modeled figure of a dog with applied coleslaw fur and large ears, standing on an oblong base with scalloped ends. Impressed circular eyes and incised details to muzzle and toes. Surface covered in a dark-brown lead-and-manganese glaze. Excellent size and desirable standing stance. Two related dogs reside in the collection of Winterthur Museum in Winterthur, Delaware, one featuring a hatted man riding atop the dog and the other depicting the dog in a seated stance with puppies. The latter is illustrated in H.E. Comstock's The Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Region, where it is attributed to Anthony Bacher. Very nice condition with some edge wear to base, minor surface wear to dog, and a few in-the-firing fissures to underside of base that do not extend through to top of base. H 6 1/2" ; L 6 3/4".
