Rare Early-Period Stoneware Face Jug with Rock Teeth, Signed "Lanier Meaders," Cleveland, GA, circa 1969, ovoid jug with slightly-flared spout, decorated with applied clay face includes eyes set within well-formed lids, large ears with depressed centers, nose with depressed nostrils, and mouth with applied quartz teeth. Surface covered in a mottled green "frogskin" glaze. Underside incised with Lanier Meaders signature. This work is a particularly fine example from Meaders's early years of face jug production, featuring a number of distinctive traits from the period, including its style of glaze, application of glaze covering the eyes, rock teeth, and reductive features. Among the best face jugs by this iconic Southern folk artist that we have offered. Provenance: Ex-Collection of the Atlanta folk artist/dealer, Judith Alexander, who purchased it directly from Meaders. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 9 1/4".
