Extremely Rare Stoneware Jug with Large Incised Fish Decoration, Ohio origin, circa 1820-1830, ovoid jug with narrow base and semi-rounded spout, decorated with a large, deeply-incised design of a fish with striped body and large eye. Decoration and handle terminals are highlighted in lesser-seen, reddish-brown slip composed of manganese or iron. Additional brown slip highlights to handle terminals. Striking figural decoration, measuring an impressive 9" long. This work was produced during the very early years of stoneware production in Ohio, when incised designs brought by Northeastern-trained potters were still being used. Vertical crack with small Y at top, extending 10 1/2" from base on reverse. H 14 3/4".
