Exceptional Glazed Redware Stew Pot with Profuse Slip Decoration, New England origin, possibly Charlestown, MA, 18th century, thin-walled, ovoid form with narrow base, applied handle, and delicate, rounded rim. Profusely-decorated with a variety of slip trailed designs in yellow slip, including a very large spiraling "watch spring," a pyramidal "fish scale" motif, stylized flower blossoms, straight and scalloped lines, and foliate devices. Clay ground is a mottled green and orange on exterior and a pale green with orange spotting on the interior. 18th century New England redware with such extensive use of slip decoration is rarely found and most often associated with the early potteries of Charlestown, MA. Of particular note is the wonderful use of a watch spring design on this jar, a motif most commonly associated with 18th century cobalt-decorated stoneware production in New Jersey, Manhattan, and Connecticut.
