Very Rare One-Gallon "Macy & Co." New York City Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Peacock Decoration, attributed to William Macquoid, Manhattan, NY, circa 1870, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a brushed design of a peacock with crest and fanned tail with eyes, strutting atop a stylized ground. Inscribed below with the cobalt-script advertising, "Macy & Co. / 20th St. & 6th Ave." Macy & Co was a long-time grocery store on Sixth Avenue, run by brothers, Charles H. and Theodore E. Macy, from the 1850s to the 1880s. Their house, for a period, was located on 20th St., the same street listed on this piece. Script jugs typically only featured the name of a business in cobalt, with no additional decoration. This jug's inclusion of such a decoration, already a rare design on any piece, is highly unusual. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with some minor in-the-firing iron pings. H 11 1/2".
