Rare and Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Large Incised Bird Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, probably Crolius Family, late 18th or early 19th century, ovoid jug with footed base and heavily-tooled spout, decorated with a large incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a swell-bodied bird perched on a leaf or stylized mound. An impressed circle with dotted border forms the bird's eye, an unusual treatment for examples from this school. Heavily incised feather wing detail and scalloped tip to tail. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Base chips. Two adjacent chips to spout. In-the-firing flaws, including a contact mark to bird, other smaller contact marks, a 7/8" flake to reverse below handle, small pings, crazing, and some in-the-firing discoloration to reverse. A spider crack to base area on right side/reverse of jug, continuing onto underside. H 15 3/4".
