Exceptional Five-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Cobalt Standing Dog Decoration, Stamped "WEST TROY, NY / POTTERY," New York State origin, circa 1875, wide, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a dog with turned head and curled tail, standing atop a heavily-shrubbed ground. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Relatively few figural-decorated cake crocks are known in American stoneware, this example potted in an extraordinary size. The coverage of the design (measuring 14" across the curve of the vessel's front) as well as the rarity of the crock's combined form and size rank this work among the most noteworthy examples of dog-decorated stoneware that we have ever offered. A reglued 2 1/4" flake to front of rim. An in-the-firing iron ping to front. A long T-shaped line at base on reverse. A 2 1/2" inverted Y-shaped surface line to front, not visible on interior. Lines to underside, one of which extends through to interior. Two minor chips to interior of rim. H 10" ; Diam. (across top) 14".
