Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Slip-Trailed Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "B.C. MILBURN / ALEXA," Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1850 ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and arched tab handles, decorated with a large, slip-trailed tulip plant bearing seven blossoms. Slip-trailed wavy line decoration extending completely around rim. Slip-trailed horizontal tulip motifs around shoulder on reverse. Unusual scalloped slip-trailing around handle terminals. Among the most finely-decorated Milburn jars that we have ever offered. Provenance: Recently discovered in Florida. A 1" base chip on side of jar. Several other minor to small base chips. Small chips to handles. A 3/4" in-the-firing surface flake towards base on side of jar. A tiny nick to bottom edge of rim. Minor surface wear. H 12 1/2".
