Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JOHN YOUNG & CO.," Harrisburg, PA, circa 1856-1858, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and flattened rim, decorated with a flowering tulip plant bearing two blossoms with long stamens. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark and handle terminals. A restored, top-to-bottom Y-shaped crack from rim on front, extending across underside. This crack continues as a faint, 2" unrestored hairline on reverse base of crock. A glazed-over 1 3/4" flake to top of rim, above a smaller glazed-over flake. An additional, small in-the-firing flake to top of rim. H 7 1/4" ; Diam. 8 1/4".
