Outstanding Lidded Stoneware Sugar Bowl with Profuse Cobalt Decoration and Rope-Twist Handles, attributed to Jacob Greenland or E.B. Hyssong, Cassville, PA, circa 1855, small-sized, ovoid jar with vertical collar and applied rope-twist handles, lavishly-decorated on the front and reverse with an undulating vine bearing flowers and graduated leaves. Cobalt spot decoration to handles and highlights to handle terminals. Cobalt dash decoration to base of collar. Original domed lid with profuse floral and spot decorations. Combining rarity with high visual appeal, this work is among the finest examples of Huntingdon County stoneware known. Bowl in essentially as-made condition with an in-the-firing 1" base chip (which is glazed over), some in-the-firing chipping to one handle (which is partially glazed over), and an in-the-firing contact mark to each side. Lid with small chips to flange on underside, a small chip to underside of edge, and a restored knob. H (including lid) 5 3/4".
