Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Grapes Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, large-sized, ovoid jar with applied lug handles and tooling to shoulder and rim, decorated with a large brushed design of a cluster of grapes hanging from an arched stem with leaves, flanked by two looping vines. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Desirable decoration and size. Some light bubbling to clay at shoulder on front and reverse. A 3 1/2" Y-shaped surface line on reverse, not visible on interior. A 3 3/4" inverted T-shaped surface line near base on side of jar, not visible on interior. Rim is out-of-round. A shallow 1/2" chip to interior of rim. A tiny nick to shoulder molding. A minor chip to exterior of rim on reverse. A 7/8" chip to one handle. H 14 3/4".
