Scarce Stoneware Spittoon with Elaborate Cobalt X Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG," PA origin, circa 1870, cylindrical form with footed base, recessed circular opening in top, carved oval opening at shoulder, and applied lug handles; decorated on one side with a series of three crosses composed of brushed spots. Reverse decorated with a wreath surrounding the opening, flanked by additional spotted X designs. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed with Cowden & Wilcox maker's mark at base. A lesser-seen form by Central Pennsylvania's premier stoneware manufacturer, this spittoon is the finest of only four that we have ever offered. A chip to one handle. A very minor, in-the-firing surface line to opposite handle. A thin 2" Y-shaped crack on underside, extending 3" up side of spittoon. H 5 1/4" ; Diam. 9 1/8".
