Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder, applied lug handles, and tall collar designed to hold a lid, the front decorated with the profile of a man's face, flanked by leaves. Tip of stem crossed with a slash of cobalt. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. A fine example of this iconic Cowden & Wilcox motif. Hairline at base, which forms a "V" on underside. Some additional, minor surface crazing at base, not visible on interior. Rim chips. H 11 3/8".
